THE NORTHSTAFFS ALLOTMENTS NETWORK
Green Door Activities DaySaturday 16th August 2014
Central Forest Park, Hanley
The North Staffs Allotments Network attended the Green Door Activities day for children on Saturday 16th August, 2014. There were many activities taking place during the day to engage with young people, and the Network choose to plant up pots with herb seeds that children could take home and grow on at home. By the end of the day 95 pots had been planted up, and as well as the pot of seeds the Network gave the children promotional pens, labels and growing instructions. Feedback from the children is that the seeds have germinated and are growing well.
The day was very enjoyable for both the volunteers and the children. Chris and Jayne the two volunteers were kept busy all day and some of the comments received were so positive. Two people came and thanked the Network because for them it was the first time that day their children had engaged with anyone, both of them had learning disabilities.
Overall, the Network promoted growing plants and how much enjoyment can be had from this activity. With the help of the Big Lottery Fund it enabled the Network to have promotional materials that the children and adults loved
The Village Show
Sunday 31st August 2014
Burslem Park
Once again the North Staffs Allotments Network attended the Village Show to promote allotments. The day started early for the volunteers and the weather improved as the day went on and by early afternoon the sunshine had arrived. Thanks must go out to all the volunteers who turned up for both the Network and the other organisations who attended. The Flower and Vegetable show was very successful with very good exhibits.
The Network as well as promoting allotments also planted up 100 pots of herb seeds with children and young people. It is so enjoyable watching the children and young people filling the pots , then putting the seeds in and watering. Due to The Big Lottery fund it enabled the Network to provide promotional materials to give away with the pots of seeds. Both the children and adults loved the pens, seed labels and instructions. The Network has received some feedback regarding the seeds and they have germinated. So hopefully over the winter months people will have some herbs in their kitchen windows that they can use.
Also, the Network sold some donated vegetables that will be used for future events to promote allotments and gardening.

We also looked at the gifts and skills we bring to our communities.
It was a great day.
